Electronic music composer Vangelis is dead

A composer familiar from the film Blade Runner, among others, passed away at the age of 79.

Greek composer and musician Gospel has died at the age of 79, reports The Guardian. The composer died, according to his contacts, at a French hospital on Tuesday.

According to Rolling Stone, Vangelis had contracted the coronavirus.

Vangelis is especially remembered Blade Runner (1982) – and Fire wagons (1981). For the latter, he won an Oscar.

Vangelis, real name Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou, who started composing at the age of four, grew up in Athens and started playing in various rock bands in the early 1960s. He was active in Forminx and Aphrodite’s Child, among others.

In addition to film compositions, Vangelis made music for the soloist of the band Yes Jon Andersonin with and released solo albums. He made his last film composition in 2007 El Greco to the movie.

Many have described Vangel as a pioneer of electronic music. Among others, the Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis has honored his memory and achievements in public.
