At the moment energy and gas prices are of course skyrocketing and the cheapest option is to curl up under a pile of blankets or put on a vest and thick socks, but that is not always practical. To make the choice between electric heating or a gas heater easier, we have listed the pros and cons for you.
ELECTRIC HEATING
There are different types of electric heaters; one works with radiant heating and the other is convector heating. With radiant heating, the heat from the device is sent to colder objects and surfaces in a room and these ensure that the environment is heated. Convector heating gives off heat upwards. The warm air then slowly descends, is reabsorbed by the stove and heated again sent upwards. A disadvantage of a convector heater is therefore that it can cause dry air due to the fine dust particles that are repeatedly circulated. However, with both types of electric heating, the big advantage is that you do not use fossil fuels. You can also decide for yourself where you place the heating, because you do not need a flue.
Electric heaters therefore have the advantage that they are durable and that you are free in where you place them. Unfortunately, a convector heater in particular can cause the air in the room to become dry.
HEATING WITH GAS
Gas stoves are energy efficient. Modern gas boilers can yield up to 110%, which means that they deliver more heat than they consume energy. A gas-based central heating system also distributes the heat evenly, so that there are no temperature differences, as with an electric heater. However, gas heaters are a lot less durable than electric heaters, because of the fuel consumption.
Using a gas heater certainly has advantages. The heat is distributed evenly and you need a lot less gas than electricity to heat your room. However, the use of fuels is less safe than an electric heater, and also a lot less sustainable.
PRICE
The purchase of a gas heater is a lot more expensive than that of an electric heater. With a gas heater, you not only pay for the heater itself, but also for the connection costs. Yet many people opted for a gas stove because natural gas was a lot cheaper compared to electricity. But the government wants to be gas-free by 2050 and that means that gas is becoming more and more expensive and alternatives are being promoted more and more. Today, for example, a higher power does not mean that the device is less economical. So if you opt for an electric heater with a higher power to heat your room faster, this no longer means that it will cost you tons of money.
An electric heater is therefore a lot more durable and safer than a gas heater and, although consumption is currently higher, it seems that this will change in the coming years. In the long run, a gas heater will therefore be cheaper than an electric heater.
