The retrofit bonus risks being a ghost hovering in the not so serene sky of electric mobility. The reference is togovernment incentive reserved for those who convert a petrol or diesel car into electricity, an operation in itself rather onerous which becomes prohibitive without substantial economic support. Support that was announced complete with the publication in the Official Gazette of the implementing decree that regulates the methods of delivery, but in the absence of the telematic platform necessary to manage the requests, it remains at a standstill. And since the deadline for submitting the application for access to the retrofit bonus is the December 31st there is a concrete risk for those concerned of remaining dry.

up to 3,500 as an incentive

Buying an electric car is not the only way to get around with zero emissions, there is the possibility of converting a car with a traditional internal combustion engine by transplanting an electric powetrain into it. Solution for which the Draghi government has launched a state incentive in the last few weeks of activity, with ministerial decree of 19 July 2022 published in the Official Gazette on the following 14 September, which covers up to 60% of the transformation cost for a maximum amount of 3,500 euros. The dedicated funds amount to 14 million euros. The bonus expires on December 31st and needs a platform to manage requests and disbursements, as is the case for other electricity incentives. But a month and a half after the deadline there is no trace of the platform.

WHO HAS THE RIGHT TO THE BONUS

The retrofit bonus is reserved for the conversion of passenger cars, minivans, buses and commercial vehicles originally registered with combustion engines into 100% electric vehicles. Specifically, these are the categories involved:

  • M2 (vehicles intended for the transport of persons, with more than 8 seats in addition to the driver’s seat and a maximum mass not exceeding 5 t);
  • M3 (vehicles intended for the transport of persons, with more than 8 seats in addition to the driver’s seat and a maximum mass exceeding 5 t);
  • N1 (vehicles intended for the transport of goods, with a maximum mass not exceeding 3.5 t);
