Elections in Galicia: continuity or reversal

The Galician elections closest in 15 years. Almost 2.7 million Galicians They are called to the polls tomorrow and with their vote they will decide if Galicia bet on four more years of PP or to take a turn and have a woman and nationalist preside over the Xunta for the first time in its history, yes in coalition at least with the PSdeG.

The campaign and surveys have shown that the PP of Alfonso Rueda resists as the force with the most social support, but the cushion with which the race started (five seats) seems to have narrowed and fuels some doubt about whether it will achieve a sufficient majority to protect the absolute majority. Meanwhile, the Ana Pontón’s BNG has taken flight, has distanced itself from the PSdeG and is the alternative clear to the popular ones. It had never happened. Xosé Manuel Beiras was leader of the opposition, but without real options to lead the change. However, Pontón has emerged in this campaign as the clear replacement for the PP. If he succeeds, he will have dismantled the belief that in a community with such a meager electorate that it declares itself nationalist, the alternation to the popular ones required the PSdeG to lead it. If he stays at the doorstep, with the seats that the polls predict for him, double that of the socialists, no one will be able to take away his credit. It is the alternative, and the PSdeG will return, but more weakened, to begin another crossing of the desert through the last rows of the regional hemicycle.

But in the 18-F equation, there are more variables to take into account and that can support the majority of the PPdeG, if it remains on the verge of an absolute that the popular ones take for granted. Alfonso Rueda himself revealed to FARO that he plans to get “38 deputies or more.” One of the unknowns is the emigrant vote that always votes power. In 2020, the diaspora cut a seat from the PSdeG to give it to the PP list in the province of Pontevedra.
