Election winner Albanese wants climate change in Australia

The former bank employee and graduate economist is an experienced politician: Anthony Albanese has been a member of the Australian House of Representatives since 1996 and was Minister for Infrastructure and Transport twice. In June 2013 he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister in Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s second cabinet. He has been the leader of Australia’s Social Democratic Labor Party for almost exactly three years.

The 59-year-old, who has Italian roots and goes by the nickname “Albo”, grew up in a working-class suburb of Sydney with his single mother. He likes to point out that people from humble backgrounds can also make it to the top in Australia. He has been in a relationship with Jodie Haydon (43) since 2019. He has a 21-year-old son from his first marriage.

In his election campaign under the motto “For a better future”, Albanese promised to work as prime minister for more equality, cheaper childcare, secure jobs and better pay. Above all, however, he wants to tackle the climate crisis and invest in renewable energies. Albanese once said he believes in three things: the Catholic Church, the Labor Party and the South Sydney Rabbitohs, an Australian rugby league club.
