Elderly people are shocked after robbery: ‘We thought we were safe here’

The residents of a senior flat in Oosterhout where a woman (63) was attacked in her sleep by two burglars early on Wednesday morning are shocked. “We thought we were safe here and then you hear this. The world is wrong,” sighs Mrs. Kuppens (88) with tears in her eyes.

She has lived in the complex on Kegelstraat for fifteen years and according to her, nothing has ever happened.

A number of residents visit each other on Wednesday morning in the gallery. A lady, still in her bathrobe, shouts: “Aren’t we safe here?” That feeling of insecurity is also prevalent among the others.

“In the eighteen years that I have lived here, nothing has ever happened,” says Mrs. Vermeulen (71), the victim’s immediate neighbor. Around six o’clock she was startled awake by a lot of stumbling and banging. It was quite loud, three or four times, but then it went quiet and I didn’t hear anything anymore.”

She thought her upstairs neighbor might have hit something with her walker. But when she heard nothing more, she turned over and fell asleep again. Afterwards it turned out that the bumping and banging did not come from her upstairs neighbor’s apartment, but from that of her neighbor, the victim.

“That this happened to her. You can’t just get over that.”

Ms Kuppens hopes that they catch the perpetrators quickly and that they get the punishment they deserve. Because the victim will probably never forget what happened to her, she thinks. What mainly concerns her and the other residents is the question of how the perpetrators entered the senior complex. “They can’t come in without someone opening the door,” she says.

The victim is one of the youngest residents of the complex. Very helpful towards the other, older residents, according to our reporter. “I can only wish her a lot of strength,” says Mientje (91). She also cannot believe what happened to the victim. “We have a chat sometimes. How is this possible?” she wonders. “That this happened to her. Such a young, strong woman. You just can’t get over that.”
