A tragic traffic accident involving a cyclist happened on the Zandvoorde bridge in Zandvoorde near Ostend on Friday evening. The man – a man in his seventies from the area – suddenly fell and just at that moment a truck passed that could no longer avoid a collision.
The accident happened around 5 p.m. on the Zandvoorde bridge, near the entrance and exit of the highway. What exactly happened is still unclear. It has been established that the older man was riding his bicycle across the bridge when, for unknown reasons, he suddenly fell and landed on the roadway. Just at the same time, a truck passed by. The driver was unable to avoid a collision. It was immediately clear that the situation was serious. The emergency services provided the victim – it would be a seventy-something from the neighborhood – with first aid on the spot. The man was eventually taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. As of Friday night, his condition was still critical.
“Our services made the necessary determinations on the spot, but it was not immediately clear how the man fell,” said the Ostend police. The public prosecutor’s office appointed a traffic expert to map out the precise circumstances. Due to the accident, the Zandvoorde exit was closed for a long time.
