Looking back, there’s no doubt which video game was the biggest hit in 2022. “Elden Ring” not only got through the press, but also received various awards.
2022 is also history when it comes to gaming. As in every other year, there were high and low lights, with the soul-like “Elden Ring” certainly belonging to the first category. In fact, no other game has scooped up as many awards, specifically the coveted Game of the Year award, in all of video game history. “Elden Ring” even leaves big names like “The Last of Us: Part II” or “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” behind.
The undisputed most successful game of 2022
Whether at the Game Awards, Steam Awards, the German Computer Game Award and just about every other major video game award, the winner in 2022 was almost exclusively “Elden Ring”. According to the Resetera portal, no other title was as successful in 2022.
The portal has totaled all the awards the game has received from the creators of Dark Souls and has landed at the staggering number of 338 (as of January 4, 2023). Incidentally, “God of War: Ragnarök” is in second place. However, the gap of 83 is quite clear. This is what the current top 5 list looks like:
- Place: Elden Ring (338)
- 2nd place: God of War: Ragnarok (83)
- Rank: Immortality (7)
- Rank: Horizon Forbidden West (5)
- Rank: Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (5)
“Elden Ring” overtakes “The Last of Us and “Witcher 3”
This means that “Elden Ring” actually took first place in the all-time ranking of the most successful video games. So far, “The Last of Us: Part II” has been enthroned there, which set the record in 2020. 3rd place is now “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” from 2015.
- Place: Elden Ring (338) – 2022
- Place: The Last of Us: Part II (322) – 2020
- Place: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (281) – 2015
- Place. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (264) – 2017
- Place: God of War (263) – 2018
Of course, it has to be mentioned that new awards may have been added over the years. Also, the ranking doesn’t necessarily mean that Elden Ring is the best game. As is common in other industries, gaming awards are usually chosen by the community or awarded by a jury of experts, who of course also contribute their subjective opinion. And to be honest, the competition in 2022 wasn’t particularly big either; so few triple-A titles have appeared in hardly a year. Nevertheless, the new record is remarkable and “Elden Ring” is a recommendable game that really deservedly won the prizes.
