Coach Serge Aubin didn’t want to sugarcoat the disappointing performance of the Eisbären Berlin at the start of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL).
“We still have a lot to learn. That just wasn’t good enough over sixty minutes,” said the Canadian after the German champions’ 4-2 defeat at the Nuremberg Ice Tigers on Sunday evening.
“Nürnberg were the better team from the second third. We paid the price for our mistakes. Losing a few pucks turned the momentum against us and we just couldn’t catch up,” Coach said Aubin. After a mixed preparation, it was the next setback for the polar bears.
Above all, the goal conceded to make it 1:2, scored by Nuremberg captain Patrick Reimer 16 seconds before the end of the second period, left an impression on the Berliners. “It hurt,” admitted Attacker Zach Boychuk a. “Last season we would have hit back, but this time we were just chasing in the final section.”
Newcomer Eric Hördler saw it that way: “We had enough chances, but Nürnberg cleverly used the counterattack and scored when it was important,” he admitted. “We have to work on that and play a little smarter.”
