The Eisbären Berlin have prematurely extended their contract with coach Serge Aubin, which expires at the end of the season.

The 48-year-old Canadian will also be on the sidelines for the capital city team in the next two seasons, as the current league leaders of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) announced on Friday. Despite missing the playoffs in the previous season, the Berliners initially extended the contract for this season in March.

“Serge has proven that he is the right head coach for us. “You can tell that he feels comfortable in Berlin and identifies with the polar bears,” said sports director Stéphane Richter, explaining the continued collaboration and added: “We like both the way we play under Serge and the further development of the entire team.”

Aubin took over as coach of the Eisbären for the 2019/20 season. Since then, he has led the Berlin team to two championship titles and, according to the club, has coached a total of 241 DEL games. In 2022, Aubin was named DEL Coach of the Year.

Aubin called it a “great honor” to work for the Polar Bears. “I am proud to be their head coach. I am happy to continue my work in the next two seasons and hope that we will win more championships together.”
