Captain Frank Hördler from Eisbären Berlin experienced a sporting disappointment in his 1000th game in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). On Sunday afternoon, the German champions lost against ERC Ingolstadt 3:4 (1:2, 0:1, 2:0, 0:0, 0:1) after a penalty shootout.

Thanks to goals from Marco Nowak, Leonhard Pföderl and Kevin Clark, the capital city team still managed to secure a point after being down 1:3.

In front of 10,107 spectators in the arena at the Ostbahnhof, Hördler was duly celebrated before the game: the DEL honored the jubilee, the fans had prepared an impressive choreography.

The party mood quickly spread to the ice: After 74 seconds, Nowak scored for the hosts. After that, however, the home side managed little. Ingolstadt’s Charles Bertrand equalized on the power play and with his second goal ensured that the guests went into the first break with a lead.

Even after the restart, the Berliners made too many mistakes against the determined and strong Oberbayern. 15 seconds before the end of the third, Daniel Pietta was able to extend the lead of the guests completely unchallenged.

In the final section, however, the home side managed to equalize with power play goals from Pföderl and Clark. The extension remained goalless, in the penalty shoot-out Pietta again ensured the decision in favor of the Ingolstadt team.
