Eintracht Frankfurt’s Krösche on Kamada: “The contract will expire”

Satisfied with SBU transfer phase

Shortly before the end of the transfer phase, Daichi Kamada was the focus of Benfica Lisbon and is said to have agreed with the Portuguese. A change failed due to the veto of Eintracht Frankfurt, which did not want to let the 26-year-old go. In view of the Japanese player’s contract, which expires at the end of the season, this summer would have been the last chance for a transfer fee in line with the market value – should the working paper not be extended. This is exactly what sports director Markus Krösche is currently working on, but emphasizes financial caution in the negotiations despite income from the Champions League.

“We are trying to find a solution at Kamada, we are in good talks with the consultants. But I also say: We won’t do any wild things and break the salary structure, for example. If we do it once, we’ll never catch it again,” said the 41-year-old in an interview with the “Frankfurter Rundschau”.

With seven goals in six games, Kamada started the new season in top form. From the winter break, he should negotiate with other clubs about a free transfer next year. It goes without saying that there should be no shortage of buyers – with a market value of 22 million euros, the attacking midfielder is the fourth most valuable player in the Bundesliga with his contract ending in 2023.

Nevertheless, Krösche wants to weigh up in the negotiations whether an extension with Kamada makes sense at all: “It may be financial damage if someone leaves us for free in the summer, but the damage is much, much greater once you break the salary structure. The Champions League played into our hands in another respect: the saying ‘either extend or sell’ has been softened a little as a result. Now we can say: Then the contract will expire, he will continue to play and we have quality in the squad.”

Eintracht Frankfurt’s Krösche on the lack of right-back transfer

Looking at the past transfer window, Krösche draws a positive conclusion. Twelve additions face 18 departures, Eintracht recorded a minus of 8.6 million euros. “The squad was fixed relatively early on, that was also our objective. In the end we only lost Filip Kostic from the regular players. The Martin Hinteregger case was different again. We made a lot of transfers overall, that’s true, but we kept the fluctuation of the permanent staff to a very low level. Continuity is important and it should stay that way,” said the sports director.

The only question left is who will occupy the right-back position. In the last few games, Kristijan Jakic (25) helped out in the newly established back four, for the back five played last year there is currently a lack of width in central defense.

“We looked at the market, sure, but we only wanted to do something if we believed in it. And we weren’t,” emphasized Krösche and referred to the existing staff around Jakic, Timothy Chandler (32) and the more offensive variants Ansgar Knauff (20) and Faride Alidou (21). On Deadline Day, Jordan Beyer’s commitment was briefly discussed, but he eventually switched to Burnley FC. “We don’t just want to act out of actionism,” says Krösche. “A lot doesn’t always help a lot.”
