In the Bundesliga, Mainz 05 could not reward themselves with a win for a lot of effort. Frankfurt’s individual class secured another point for the SGE in the Rhein-Main derby.
On Sunday (November 13th, 2022) 1. FSV Mainz 05 and Eintracht Frankfurt drew 1-1 (1-0). In a game full of variety, Mainz was the first to be more energetic, taking the lead through Jonathan Burkardt before half-time (40′). Frankfurt was then kept in the game by goalkeeper Kevin Trapp and got better through the individual class. Randal Kolo Muani consequently equalized (67th).
Frankfurt now have 27 points – a record for Eintracht in the days of the three-point rule after 15 Bundesliga matchdays – and are initially ahead of Union Berlin in third place. The capitals can still catch up against Freiburg (5:30 p.m.). Mainz remains in the gray middle of the table, but ends the series of three bankruptcies in a row.
Mainz slows down Frankfurt’s speed game
After the sobering defeat against Schalke at the bottom of the table, Mainz had decided to make amends. Anton Stach often pushed forward from midfield. Mainz attacked early in order to put a stop to Frankfurt’s speed game in the build-up phase. That worked: Mainz won 65 percent of the duels.
Eintracht becomes more active, but remains ineffective
Dominik Kohr’s shot from the edge of the penalty area gave Mainz the second chance after eight minutes, after an attempt by Burkardt for a corner had been blocked. Mainz was very present, Frankfurt had initial problems.
Significant for the initial phase of Eintracht: Daichi Kamada’s pass jumped Kolo Muani, alone in the open, completely off his foot and into the arms of Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner (11th).
Burkardt rewards more dangerous Mainzers
Although the SGE took control of the game in the meantime, Frankfurt rarely found its way into the attacking third. Apart from Kolo Muani’s offside goal after a mistake by goalkeeper Zentner (32nd), there was little concrete to see from SGE in the first half.
Instead, Burkardt rewarded Mainz with his first goal of the season. After a corner kick from Stach, Trapp parried a Burkardt header and Onisiwo’s follow-up shot. But Burkardt scurried through the six-yard box again and was served by Onisiwo.
Goalkeeper Trapp keeps Eintracht in it, Kolo Muani scores
After the break, Mainz coach Bo Svensson’s team just picked up where they left off. Trapp had to intervene several times, preventing shots from Burkardt (47th) and Barreiro Martins (56th).
And Trapp’s team thanked the keeper: Kolo Muani was then staged by World Cup driver Mario Götze with a technically adept ball in the back of the Mainz defense. The Frenchman stayed cool in front of Zentner and scored his sixth goal of the season.
There was almost a rude awakening for the 05ers: This time Zentner, who had stormed out earlier, parried another lob from Götze (74th). The draw was okay in the end.
