Draw against Gladbach
Eintracht Frankfurt showed morale on the way to Seville and averted a defeat in the Bundesliga against ex-coach Adi Hütter. The Europa League finalist from Hesse fought a 1-1 (0-1) win against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Sunday, but is in stark contrast to the magical nights of the European Cup, but only in twelfth place in the league. Alassane Pléa (4th) gave the visitors the lead, which was equalized by Gonçalo Paciência (66th) in front of 51,500 spectators.
Both Gladbach and Frankfurt will no longer be in the top half of the table after a messed-up Bundesliga season. Europe via the league was long overdue. The Eintracht focus is now completely on May 18th. Then the Europa League final is on the program in Andalusia. Coach Oliver Glasner had already announced before the remaining two Bundesliga games that everything would be geared towards this title game, in which Frankfurt could also enter the Champions League.
On a wonderful spring day, the Hessians first said goodbye to their former captain David Abraham, who left in January 2021 but was not to receive his honor in a stadium that was empty due to the corona virus. “You have always represented unity powerfully. You are a great player in this unity,” said board spokesman Axel Hellmann. Frankfurt’s fans had long since made their sporting priorities clear: “It doesn’t matter today – bring us the trophy,” said a large banner in the curve.

Glasner also set up his team according to this motto. In addition to the injured Martin Hinteregger, the complete offensive with Daichi Kamada, Rafael Borré and Filip Kostic as well as the defensive midfield with captain Sebastian Rode and Djibril Sow were missing at the beginning. Eight changes compared to the West Ham win meant a lot of change – and a false start straight away.
Gladbach started well and was rewarded after just a few minutes. After a pass from Stefan Lainer on the right, Pléa completed the ball into the far corner from close range. The Frenchman initially lay down after scoring his ninth goal of the season, but was then able to continue playing. After that, little or nothing happened for a long time. The Eintracht reservists could not exactly be recommended for use in the Europa League final.

A summer kick developed between two teams for which it is no longer about much. Sometimes such games end with a lot of goals, but this game was initially characterized by a few scenes in the goal area. Kostic came at half-time and should speed up Eintracht’s game a bit. But Borussia set the pace: Breel Embolo failed after a nice pass from Pléa because Kevin Trapp, who was again one of the best Frankfurt professionals, rushed out.

On the other side, Stefan Ilsanker (51.) should have equalized from close range, but missed. The 1:1 was only achieved when Ilsanker had just been substituted: Striker Paciencia shot boldly from long range and was able to beat Tobias Sippel, who was in the Borussia goal instead of Yann Sommer. Embolo then had Gladbach’s winning goal on his feet again and again, but failed due to his own clumsiness and Makoto Hasebe, who cleared the line. A Eintracht goal by Kamada in the 89th minute was disallowed for offside.
