Eintracht’s interest in a transfer of the 30-year-old was already there before the first meeting in June on Mallorca “and I was open to it,” says Götze with a view to his return to the Bundesliga – which is independent of million-dollar changes like that of Sadio Manés to FC Bayern at national level is already one of the most spectacular transfers of the summer. In particular, trainer Oliver Glasner and his way of working convinced Götze of the SBU: “For me as an athlete, it was about finding out how he thinks as a trainer. How he thinks on the pitch. How open he is. How he treats you. It was all very positive. The development here last season didn’t happen by chance.” The conversation with the Austrian didn’t last longer than 30 minutes, but was still sufficient as a basis for Götze’s decision to change: “When I hung up, I was convinced. The coach is the crucial point in a change.”

Mario Götze at Eintracht Frankfurt: “What counts for me: daily”

In addition to consultant Volker Struth, sports director Markus Krösche and trainer Glasner, Götze also found out about the situation in Hesse within the team with Sebastian Rode and Kevin Trapp. “No matter from which direction I got information, it was consistent and confirmed my decision to go to Frankfurt,” said the ex-national player. The change also feels “good” after the completion and the first training sessions with the team: “It is a very important step for me and it will certainly be an exciting phase in my life. I’m just happy to be with Eintracht.”

Goals & Highlights by Mario Götze at PSV Eindhoven

The midfielder, whose contract runs until 2025, does not want to look too far into the future: “I used to make plans about what I wanted to achieve, what level I wanted to reach in one or two years. That doesn’t exist anymore. I focus on today, the next day and the week. Of course I have goals and I know the game plan, but now I can let it run. What counts for me: daily.”

“I had a certain pressure and a certain expectation in my career. Today it is pleasure. I realized that you have to work for pressure. You have to earn high expectations! Only what is expected of you is expected. Today I can classify it better than a few years ago,” Götze continued about his personal development. Due to his new family situation and the associated responsibility (Editor’s note: Götze has been the father of a son for two years), he now experiences football much “more consciously, my senses are sharper, which helps me with decisions.”

Eintracht newcomer Götze on previous transfers: “Everything had to happen that way”

The fact that the latter were not always correct in the past is reflected by the right foot, who has generated transfer proceeds of 63 million euros from four club changes to date. Looking back, for example, he assesses his return to BVB differently in 2016: “Liverpool finished eighth in the first season with Jürgen Klopp and didn’t qualify for the Champions League. Even in previous years, it wasn’t the club that always played at the top. I came from Bavaria and had this right. Dortmund had previously played a top season under Thomas Tuchel. BVB was up. Jürgen was still building something. In retrospect you have to say: Liverpool would have been better.”

All in all, the 2014 world champion, who in the years that followed repeatedly had to be accused of a lack of ambition or quality in public, does not harbor any grudges when looking back. “Everything had to happen the way it happened. The EM 2012, the move to Bayern 2013, the 2014 World Cup, Liverpool or Dortmund: That’s my life. I’m a happy person,” says Götze.
