The Eintracht Frankfurt footballers still have to worry about reaching the quarter-finals in the Champions League.
Coach Niko Arnautis’ team only managed a 1-1 (1-0) draw in the groundbreaking game against Benfica from Lisbon and failed to move past the Portuguese in Group A.
Geraldine Reuteler took the lead after an assist from national player Laura Freigang (28th), but Nycole Raysla (71st) equalized for the guests. Shortly before the end, Freigang missed the chance to win: The 25-year-old was denied by Benfica keeper Lena Pauels with a penalty in the fourth minute of injury time.
Due to the draw, Frankfurt lost the direct comparison with Lisbon; the Hessians suffered a 0-1 defeat in the first leg. With four points, Eintracht is in third place, three points behind second-placed Benfica.
In the final two group games against leaders FC Barcelona (January 25th) and against FC Rosengard (January 31st), the Frankfurt team are now doomed to win and at the same time have to hope for mistakes from the competition. Only the first and second teams in the group advance to the quarter-finals.
