Toying with a return to the Bundesliga
The search for strikers at Eintracht Frankfurt recently brought up new names almost every day. In the next two weeks, sports director Markus Krösche reportedly wants to decide on one or possibly even two new attackers who will increase the SGE’s previously meager goal tally (19 goals after 13 match days). According to information from the “Sports picture“ also the ex-Mainz player Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The 26-year-old Frenchman moved from Rheinhessen to English club Crystal Palace in the summer of 2022 for a fee of 11 million euros. The 1.92 meter tall offensive force has since played 80 competitive games for the “Egales”, scoring 13 goals and setting up another four goals. In the current season, Mateta, whose contract at Selhurst Park runs until 2026, has six goals to his name.
Knauff, Pacho & Co.: Most expensive additions from Eintracht Frankfurt
He already has 29 of these from a total of 67 games for FSV between 2018 and 2021 from his time in the Bundesliga. Mateta had his best rate to date in the 2018/19 season, when he played in all 34 games under coach Sandro Schwarz and scored a total of 14 times. His career high market value of 22 million euros also dates from this time, which has now shrunk to 7 million euros. According to reports, the center forward was already toying with a return to the Bundesliga last summer and his club is said to be willing to talk about a transfer fee of 10 million euros.
Mateta to Eintracht Frankfurt? Skepticism in TM rumor mill
The speculation surrounding Mateta is being discussed controversially in the TM rumor mill. User “Eifelschweini,” for example, writes: “Mateta played quite well in Mainz back then, but not outstanding either… He couldn’t assert himself at Palace either and scored poorly. Don’t think Mateta is a reinforcement.”
So I don’t have a real opinion on the transfer, but what bothers me is that with every transfer you look at “young, viable, resale value”. Don’t think he’s from that category. We have enough players in the squad and also enough players in our sights with Orban, Brown, Durosinmi, etc. At some point we need players with more experience, which we currently have a shortage of, especially in attack. Talents in the position with Nacho and Futkeu are also available…
The user “Adlertraeger77” has a similar opinion: “For a striker who hasn’t scored a single goal in ten games, he is too old and therefore doesn’t have enough development potential. If he were 20 years old now, you could say that there is still enough time to develop him further and then sell him profitably, but not at 26. You would have to bring him up to standard in almost two seasons in order to still have him to some extent at 28 to be able to sell well. Then it’s better to have a finished, but older player who has proven his qualities and who you consciously plan for two to four years without any resale ambitions.”
These are the top earners at Eintracht Frankfurt
It remains to be seen whether Eintracht’s rumored interest in Mateta will materialize. Like the broadcaster “Sky“ most recently reported, the Hessians are also about to sign the talented goalscorer Rafiu Durosinmi from Viktoria Pilsen (to the article). The 20-year-old, 1.92 meters tall and with nine goals and six assists in 19 competitive games this season, is expected to cost between 7 million and 8 million euros, excluding possible bonuses, and will complete the medical check-up on the Main in December. Only details remain to be clarified, it was said at the end of last week. There is also said to be an agreement on a transfer with Nuremberg’s U21 national player Nathaniel Brown (20), but not until next summer (see article).
