Shortly before the end of the transfer window, Randal Kolo Muani moved from Eintracht Frankfurt to Paris Saint-Germain, leaving a big hole in the SGE’s striker position. One that Elye Wahi would probably have liked to have stuffed if a few things had gone differently.
“I’ve even spoken to the coach (Dino Toppmöller; editor’s note). He speaks French, that was important for me. But we had to wait for the transfer of Randal Kolo Muani. And we had to wait even longer complicated. But I don’t regret anything,” the 20-year-old told the French “L’Équipe”.
Because the transfer of compatriot Kolo Muani continued to be delayed, Wahi moved from Montpellier to Champions League participant RC Lens on August 20th for around 30 million euros. For some observers, this was a surprising decision, as in addition to Frankfurt, other top European clubs were also said to be interested in the Frenchman.
A move to Frankfurt was probably hotter than to Chelsea
But for Wahi himself, staying in Ligue 1 is said to have always been a top priority: “My first goal was to stay in France. So I think I made the right choice.”
A move to Chelsea FC – the Blues were said to be very interested in a signing – was not an issue: “I didn’t want to go to Chelsea. But it was hot with Frankfurt – more than with Chelsea.”
When Wahi was already employed at RC Lens, Kolo Muani finally went to PSG on the last day of the transfer window. The shooting star of the last Bundesliga season had previously threatened those responsible at Eintracht Frankfurt with an extended strike.
Although the club ultimately sold the attacker to the French capital for around 95 million euros, they no longer had time to sign an adequate replacement. Sports director Markus Krösche wants to tackle this construction site next winter.
