An unjustly disallowed goal by Halle caused a stir in Braunschweig. Referee Frank Bokop (Vechta) ruled offside at 1-1 through Elias Huth – it was BTSV professional Jannis Nikolaou who kicked the ball in front of Huth’s feet. Eintracht sports director Peter Vollmann admitted on NDR that they were very lucky here: “It was a wrong decision not to recognize the goal. You have to say that.”
After the 22nd day of play, Braunschweig, third in the table, now has 39 points and still one game to play. Due to the Corona-related cancellation of the game at Viktoria Berlin, the Eintracht Braunschweig footballers only started the rest of the round on Saturday. It was the first competitive game for the “Löwen” since December 18 (1-1 against Kaiserslautern). Osnabrück is at least temporarily in eighth place with 33 points.
Eintracht is denied a penalty
“The aim is to continue where we left off in 2021,” said Eintracht coach Michael Schiele before the game. He was referring to the four games before the winter break in which Eintracht had remained unbeaten (three wins, one draw).
And his team set about putting this plan into action right after kick-off. Braunschweig started very energetically and had their first good opportunities through Luc Ihorst with a shot from an acute angle (5th) and Lasse Schlueter (10th). HFC keeper Tim Schreiber saved the ball on both occasions. The Lower Saxony were unlucky that after a handball by Niklas Landgraf from Halle, Bokop didn’t take the penalty kick that was actually due (20′).
After half an hour, the Braunschweig superiority was gone. Halle became bolder and approached the BTSV goal more often. Julian-Maurice Derstroff did this a little too rustically. He collided with Eintracht keeper Jasmin Fejzic. The veteran remained motionless for a moment, but was able to continue after treatment (37th). It was 0-0 at the break.
Ihorst becomes the match winner for Braunschweig
After the restart, little happened in front of the gates. But that changed abruptly in the 65th minute. Martin Kobylanski played against decimated guests – central defender Jonas Nietfeld was still being treated off the pitch – the ball straight into Ihorst’s run, who kept his nerve in the duel with Schreiber and scored to make it 1-0.
Halle is wrongly denied the compensation
Ten minutes later, it looked as if the joy at taking the lead was short-lived. But Bokop refused to recognize Huth’s equalizer. Halle pushed in the closing stages, but Braunschweig brought the lead over time.
