According to the South African police, officers approached the criminal group, after which the group opened fire on them. The police would have responded to that. The violent confrontation took place in the village of Makhado, in the northeastern province of Limpopo, and lasted about an hour and a half.
Sixteen men and two women died on the spot. Four members of the group were arrested. Police are also continuing to search for other members of the group who have fled. Police also seized weapons and explosives, which were to be used in the robbery.
