Eight dead and ten injured in second shooting in two days in Serbia | Abroad

Eight people were killed and ten injured in a new shooting in Serbia on Thursday evening, Serbian media report. The shooting took place near the town of Mladenovac, about 60 kilometers south of the capital Belgrade. On Wednesday, a 13-year-old student at a school in Belgrade shot dead eight students and a security guard.

Late Thursday evening, the perpetrator shot a group of people from a moving vehicle with an automatic weapon and then fled from the scene of the facts towards the village of Dubona. The police launched a massive manhunt and located his whereabouts. A large police force has surrounded him, public broadcaster ‘RTS’ reports.

Serbia declared three days of national mourning on Wednesday after a 13-year-old boy committed a massacre at his own school. He shot and killed eight students and a guard. Six students and a teacher were also injured. Two students remain in a critical condition in hospital.

The boy cannot be prosecuted because of his age, but he has been transferred to a psychiatric clinic. He would have prepared his act for a month and made a list of students he wanted to kill.

Measures

After the drama at the Belgrade school, the Serbian government announced a series of measures to combat such shootings and other violence in schools. For example, no more gun permits will be issued for the time being and legislation is being prepared to prosecute people who give children access to guns. The government also wants to lower the age at which perpetrators of violent crimes can be prosecuted from 14 to 12 years. In addition, a working group will be formed to investigate the safety of children on the Internet.
