Egmonders demand solution for digital parking: ‘Unworkable and inhuman’

The switch to ‘digital parking’ is still a thorn in the side of residents of Egmond aan Zee. Previously, there were concerns in the coastal village as to whether people who are not digitally skilled would be able to work with the system. Now the user-friendliness is also being discussed. A letter, signed by more than six hundred Egmonders, asks for a better parking solution. “We are not waiting for all that red tape.”

In addition to regular paid parking, permit parking applies in Egmond aan Zee. Nowhere in the coastal village is parking free between March 1 and October 31. Villagers can buy a permit for their own car, for visitors and a permit for holidaymakers. The latter is for tourists who rent summer houses at Egmonders in the garden.

The digital system replaces the paper permit. The municipality teamed up with Coöperatie Parking Service from Amersfoort, which previously was traded in by Alkmaar† In addition to Egmond aan Zee, digital parking for residents also applies in Bergen aan Zee, Bergen center and Schoorl center. Complaints also come from these cores.

To be precise, there are 609 signatures under the letter that the Egmond Suzan Boom (28) wrote to the city council. According to Suzan, the digital parking system introduced this year is ‘very user-unfriendly’.

“The system that has now been introduced is not workable,” says Suzan. “The administration takes a lot of time, the computer system often does not work, and I do not want to bear the responsibility of entering the license plates of our German bathers correctly.”

“It’s not just about being digitally skilled or not. We have not been asked anything, we are not heard, so that’s why I wrote a letter. The whole village is in turmoil. Also because with that digital visitor’s permit family members only have four hours were allowed to visit. The paper system with a turntable worked fine.”

Reaction municipality

“As I promised after the first fuss, customization has been provided for people who are not digitally skilled,” alderman Erik Bekkering told NH Nieuws. “To date, 168 visitor and 54 recreational permits have been issued on paper.” Furthermore, the extra familiarization period ends tomorrow. “Per May 1 will be maintained. But if anyone receives an unjust ticket, it will be torn to pieces.”

After 10 May, the alderman expects to be able to say more about any changes to the parking policy in the municipality. “Then we will discuss the ‘parking implementation paragraph’ in the council and we will submit a proposal to the council.”

He expects that the parking and the letter sent from Egmond will be discussed further at the end of May, and that decisions can be taken by the city council at the beginning of June.
