Bernal cycled into a stationary bus at full speed during a training session in Colombia. He suffered a series of injuries, including a fractured spine, a fractured femur, a fractured kneecap, a chest trauma, a perforated lung and multiple broken ribs and has already undergone two surgeries.
The patient is in a recovery phase that is going well, the clinic reported. He will undergo two secondary procedures on Friday, in which he is not in danger of life.
The Colombian himself also came up with a response and was especially grateful. “I had a 95 percent chance of having a spinal cord injury and almost lost my life doing what I love most. Today I want to thank God and am grateful to the University Clinic La Sabana and all its specialists for doing the impossible,” he posted on Instagram. “I’m still in ICU and waiting for more operations, but I trust God that everything will be fine.”
In addition to the 2019 Tour, Bernal also won the 2021 Giro d’Italia. This year, the Tour de France was the main goal of the Ineos rider.
