With Chris Führich, VfB Stuttgart has had a senior national player in its ranks again this season. Former Bundesliga star Stefan Effenberg thinks that Julian Nagelsmann should nominate another Swabian player.
Waldemar Anton is one of the successful faces of VfB Stuttgart this season. The defensive giant holds the Bundesliga team’s defense together and leads the team onto the field as captain.
In times of German defensive weakness in the DFB team, Anton would be an alternative for national coach Julian Nagelsmann. However, the 27-year-old has not yet been called up to the team.
VfB Stuttgart: Would Anton be one for Nagelsmann?
This is what Stefan Effenberg brings to the table. The former professional footballer asked in the “double pass” of “Sport1”: “Why isn’t Waldemar Anton invited to the national team? He deserves it.”
By the way: A few weeks ago Effenberg said something similar about Chris Führich – and shortly afterwards the outside speedster was actually nominated for the first time.
Looking at the central defenders in the Bundesliga, Effenberg explained: “The only one who has really developed further as a central defender is Jonathan Tah at Bayer Leverkusen.”
Waldemar Anton is not “disappointed”
Anton said after VfB’s 2-1 win against Dortmund that he was “not at all disappointed” that he was not included in the international matches against Turkey (November 18th) and Austria (November 21st).
“I try to bring my performance to the pitch and always give 100 percent,” he said. “That’s the only thing I can influence.” There are many good central defenders in Germany, Anton continued. “I’m not going crazy at all. If it’s enough in the end and the national coach is convinced, that’s great. And if not, that’s the way it is.”
In his career he has played eleven games for the U21 national team, but he has not yet been considered for the senior team.
