EEA: EU emissions rise after pandemic, climate targets at risk | Abroad

Still, the EU needs to step up its efforts if it is to meet its targets, warns the European Environment Agency (EEA).

The EU’s target of a 55 percent reduction in net emissions by 2030 “is not expected to be achieved according to current projections,” said EEA’s Melanie Sporer, presenting the figures. “We will need to double our efforts to reduce emissions every year until 2030,” she said. These efforts should lead to an average reduction of 134 million tons of CO2 per year between now and 2030.

The EEA notes that the biggest gains can be made in energy supply, the sector with the highest CO2 emissions in the EU.
