Edwin Evers could mean a lot to Radio 538 if he would help the station out once a week, thinks Patrick Kicken. “He can help his old companions on their way.”
It continues to rumble at Radio 538 since the departure of Edwin Evers five years ago. After Frank Dane, his unmotivated successor Wietze de Jager must now also make way. He and his co-host Klaas van der Eerden will be replaced after the summer by Radio Veronica’s morning trio: Tim Klijn, Niels van Baarlen and Rick Romijn.
Evers back on 538?
Niels and Rick have always been Edwin’s trusted sidekicks, while Tim has regularly replaced him. So a familiar sound returns in the morning of 538.
What does radio columnist Patrick Kicken think? He says in The Telegraph: “I think they are going to do great. But the icing on the cake would of course be if Edwin Evers helped his old companions on their way by, for example, joining us once a week. Or make jingles for them.”
Best Morning Show
Edwin says in a response to RTL Boulevard that he thinks the choice for Tim, Niels and Rick is great. “I think they make the best morning show so I think putting them on 538 is a smart move. A strong morning show can of course help to increase the listening figures, but more will have to be done…”
With this, Edwin makes it subtly clear that he does not think his current successors at 538, Wietze and Klaas, make the best morning show.
‘Looks like Evers’
Evert Santegoeds applauds the new 538 trio. He says in the podcast Strictly Private: “I think this is a really good move because this is most like Edwin Evers as it once was. It’s not Edwin Evers; Tim Klijn will not do voices and such, but in terms of humor and in terms of pace and of course with those men it comes very close to what Evers did.”
He continues: “You shouldn’t do that immediately, then I can imagine that it will fail. If Edwin Evers goes away and you put someone in there who’s going to do the same thing there’s a good chance that won’t work but it’s been a few years now and then I think it’s the best choice for 538 in the morning because they do have chemistry with each other.”
Back as a replacement?
Colleague Jordi Versteegden added: “Tim sometimes filled in for Edwin when Edwin was on holiday. Would Edwin now fill in on 538 when Tim goes on vacation?”
Evert: “I don’t think so, because then the old feeling comes back, which you are trying to replace and which they have not succeeded too much in so far. I thought Frank Dane was a very good choice at the time. It was very surprising that he had to make way for Wietze and Klaas, who didn’t really come out on top. It was never about Wietze and Klaas here.”
