Educació announces more support monitors after criticism from families

  • Catalan public schools will go from having 47,000 hours of caregivers in the 2021-2022 academic year to 54,000 hours in the current academic year

The Department of Education has made public this Friday a statement in which it explains the increase for this school year in the hours of service of support monitors for the students with special educational needs. An increase that will suppose, according to the same note, 15% more hours dedicated to the support of these students in public educational centers. Thus, it will go from 47,000 hours of the 2021-2022 academic year to 54,000 hours of the current academic year, about 7,000 more weekly hours.

The ‘ministry’ makes this figure public a few days after the families organized themselves and, supported by the aFFac, denounced that five years after the approval of the decree, and one after the deadline established for its full deployment, inclusive education is still not a reality. Every day a new case of a child whose rights are violated due to the lack of resources in inclusive education is made public.

The monitors and support monitors for students with special educational needs are essential personnel to care for these children in relation to the tasks of care and personal hygiene or those of accompaniment in transfers.

The distribution of the monitors, continues the aforementioned statement from the Department“is carried out based on the needs of the students detected by the psychopedagogical counseling team” and are assigned to each educational center.
