Eddy van Wessel winner Silver Camera 2022 | Interior

Photographer Eddy van Wessel has won the Silver Camera 2022 in Hilversum. He won this prize with the impressive black-and-white series ‘Ruins for freedom’ about the war in Ukraine.

Van Wessel received the prize and a check for 10,000 euros from Barbara Wolfensberger, Director-General for Culture and Media (Ministry of Education, Culture and Science). It is the first time that a photographer has won the Silver Camera for the fourth time. He previously won the prize in 2019, 2015 and 2012. The Silver Camera has been awarded since 1949

According to Natalia Toret, chairman of the Silver Camera jury, the jury unanimously chose this ‘impressive series’. “The images made a deep impression on the jury. Each photo hits a nail in your soul and when you see the next image it goes a little deeper. Van Wessel depicts the victims of the war with great respect and discretion. There is a nice layering in the images and every photo in the series is good, urgent, complete and tells a new story. This photographer knows his trade.”

The Silver Camera exhibition can be seen from 12 February to 2 April in Museum Hilversum.
