Eddie Vedder honors Mark Lanegan: ‘We will always hear his voice’

Like much of the rock world, Mark Lanegan’s death has devastated Eddie Vedder. During his solo concert on Tuesday evening (February 22), Vedder paid tribute to the Screaming Trees singer, who died the same day: At one point, the 57-year-old paused to remember Lanegan and him on behalf of the entire grunge scene of Seattle to pay tribute.

Allergic reaction to grief

“I got here around four o’clock and all of a sudden my body started shaking a little bit,” Vedder explained, continuing: “I started to feel really horrible and I think it was because I have an allergic reaction to grief. Because we lost… there’s a guy named Mark Lanegan. You know, there are a lot of really great musicians, some people know Seattle because of the musicians that come from the Northwest. Some of them were one-time singers. Mark was one of those and he had such a strong voice.”

“At least we’ll always hear his voice”

While mourning Vedder, he at least holds on to Lanegan’s artistic legacy: “It’s hard to come to terms with it, at least at this point. We will miss him very much but at least we will always be able to hear his voice and read his words and his books, he has written two incredible books in the last few years. I just wanted to process it and make it public, let his wife and loved ones know that the people of his old homeland have thought of him and we love him.”
