He is considered the godfather of funk. Alongside James Brown and Sly Stone, there is a constant spirit of innovation in his guild. A central figure in the pioneering R’n’B formations Funkadelic and Parliament, George Clinton brought psychedelic madness to black music from the late 1960s. With his colorful fantasy clothes and hits like “Atomic Dog” or “Hey, Good Lookin'” his sounds became the hottest sample sources in hip hop.

Now the dazzling life of the 80-year-old is to be filmed. And of all fun king Eddie Murphy (61) should take the lead in this biopic. It will be interesting to see which stages in Clinton’s life he will take on himself on his way from the good souler in New Jersey to the later radio explosions.

The US trade magazines “Variety” and “Deadline” report that the project “is in development”. It is intended to trace Clinton’s life and legacy from his deprived youth in North Carolina and New Jersey to the invention of his space orchestras in 1968. Clinton’s influence on subsequent generations of black music and artists such as Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Outkast or the Wu-Tang Clan should be illuminated. Elements of his funk cosmos can also be found in the crossover of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

In the video interview of ROLLING STONE, the old master still said in 2021: “I don’t give a shit about my legacy!”. But he didn’t want to turn down Eddie Murphy’s biopic offer. Murphy not only acts as Clinton’s revenant on screen, he also takes on the role of producer.

The project is currently in the initial phase. The filmmakers are currently working in cooperation with the Clinton management on the use of the song rights. The scriptwriters are ready. The project is probably related to a deal that Eddie Murphy made with the studios of Amazon’s streaming subsidiary in 2021: a contract package for three films.
