The European Central Bank (ECB) decided to stop producing 500 euro banknotes in 2016, a measure that became effective in 2019. Not many used to be seen but, despite the fact that they are no longer issued, they are still legal tender.
The 500 banknotes are still in circulation and, according to the ECB “these banknotes will hold their value indefinitely and can be exchanged at national central banks of the euro area at any time & rdquor ;.
Of course, not all businesses can trade with them. The sites where they can be “recirculated & rdquor; these bills are own banks, money transfer companies or currency exchange offices.The Treasury is very aware of the 500 bills that continue to circulate and has full knowledge of where they are. The operations that can be done with them are the same as before 2016.
