An agreement under which the United States will increase supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe to reduce the EU’s dependence on Russian fuel could lead to negative consequences of climate change, writes The Guardian, citing environmentalists.

According to Kelly Sheehan, a spokesman for the Sierra Club, a non-profit environmental organization, this “will fix decades of dependence on risky volatile fossil fuels and spell disaster for our climate.” According to Sheehan, we need to switch to “clean energy” as soon as possible, and not increase the production of fossil fuels.”

According to Cassie Siegel, director of the Center for Biological Diversity’s Climate Law Institute (an American NGO), the US decision to increase supplies to the EU will not help solve the energy crisis in Europe. “Creating new toxic export facilities and extending the expiration date of methane gas for decades is a death sentence for those on the front lines of the fight against the climate emergency,” she said.

As the expert stated, the increase in the production of fossil fuels “adds fuel to the fire of our burning world.”

March 25 White House informedthat the United States has entered into an agreement with the European Union for the supply of at least 15 billion cubic meters. m of LNG to EU countries this year.
