Ecolo MP victim of Chinese cyber attack | Interior

MP Samuel Cogolati (Ecolo) has been the target of a cyber attack from China. The French-speaking Greens announced this on Wednesday. Cogolati wants our country to investigate the scope of Chinese cyber attacks on our country.

The Green MP has been in Beijing’s sights for some time. His fight for recognition of the mistreatment of the Uyghurs, among other things, was a thorn in China’s side. “If the Communist Party thinks it is intimidating us in this way, it is mistaken,” Ecolo said. “We will continue to take up the gauntlet as long as the camps of infamy are not closed.”

Cogolati also wants Belgium to map out the scope of Chinese cyber attacks. “The hackers do not break into our servers for fun. There is a methodology behind it, aimed at human rights defenders and organized on behalf of the Chinese regime. There must be complete clarity about the duration, nature and victims of the cyberattacks against Belgium,” said Cogolati.

The government should launch an investigation to see if sensitive or classified data has leaked to Beijing. The attacks should not be without consequences for Cogolati either. If an attack can clearly be attributed to a government agency, then it should be denounced through diplomatic channels and the government behind the attack should be responsible for the repair costs, says Cogolati.
