Dthe food disorders people still die, and a lot, even in Italy. According to the data ReNCam (Register of names of causes of death) in fact, there are around 4 thousand deaths every year due to the lack of care in the treatment of eating disorders. That’s why the Lilac Movement takes to the streets again, demanding that these pathologies are finally included in the Essential Levels of Assistance (LEA) as separate diseases. So that they can have an autonomous budget and an obligation for each region to provide itself with all levels of care. Born in 2021, the Lilac Movement was created to support young people, adults, families and all those involved in eating disorders (DCA).
Eating disorders are multifactorial pathologies
In addition to having a mental causeeating disorders are also multifactorial pathologies that need multidisciplinary specialist interventions. Which means that a simple psychiatry department or mental health center is not enough to take care of patients. Specialists from different sectors are needed to take care of those suffering from these disorders together and in a coordinated manner.
Anorexia, bulimia and binge eating
Meanwhile the numbers grow and become frightening, yet in thelast Ministry of Health report on mental health the DCA are not even mentioned. Instead of anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and all the lesser-known nuances of DCA die. Not so much because they are incurable diseases, but because they cannot be treated immediately and well. Accessing treatment should not be a privilege, but today it is, and this is what the Lilla Movement is fighting against.
The event for eating disorders: how to participate
Bringing these difficulties to the attention of the public and institutions is essential in order to build a fair protection network around people who suffer from eating disorders. The event, organized and strongly supported by the Lilla Movement, is scheduled for November 9, 2023, from 2.00 pm, in Piazza Castellani, near the Ministry of Health in Rome.
What is asked for is a concrete change. THE eating disorders must have an independent budget in the Essential Levels of Assistance (LEA). In this way, each Region would be able to guarantee essential levels of care, allowing people to receive support without having to undertake long journeys throughout Italy.
The problem of waiting lists
Another weak point of healthcare for those suffering from DCA is the waiting times to receive treatment. The waiting lists they are just another problem that delays the possibility of receiving a diagnosis and therefore access to treatment: we are talking about times of eight months up to a year for the DCA clinic, three or four months for the day center and for the residence .
An alarming topic because starting treatment in a timely manner increases the probability of a positive outcome, while the late recognition of the disease is one of the major obstacles in the treatment of eating disorders: the delay in diagnosis seriously influences the evolution of the disorder.
