Easter busy for poultry farmers with egg sales at home: ‘Always a good time’

The chickens don’t care, but the poultry farmers who sell eggs at home have to step up their game. With the Easter weekend just around the corner, the eggs are in great demand.

Mariska Oving from Odoornerveen already fills up the egg dispenser at the front of the farm several times a day. “It’s always a good time,” she says, packing boxes for the vending machine. “People now consume more than they normally do. An egg every day is already very good, now we use a little more eggs.”

The chickens at poultry farmer Oving lay more than fifty thousand eggs per day. They leave the barn in the sorting area via a conveyor belt. “The chickens don’t care about Easter, they just lay an egg every day. Seven days a week. Here we sort the eggs. We remove the dirty ones, they are broken and end up in the shampoo, for example,” says Oving. “The large eggs don’t fit in the crates, we also take them out for use in the vending machine, for example.”

Daughter Elisa is a handy help in these times and picks up the dirty and oversized eggs from the conveyor belt. She also helps with the orders. “She is a good force, like last week we had so many extra orders. That she also helps with packing.”
