However, if you want to do something different this year, there are so many events around Italy, appointments to discover new traditions and get to know beautiful and fascinating places.
Easter and Easter Monday weekend with traditions
It is one of the events not to be missed for Easter 2023 if you decide for Tuscany. The Explosion of the Florentine Cart it has been taking place for centuries on the morning of Easter Sunday at 11.
The “Brindellone”, the chariot “of fire” escorted by 150 soldiers, musicians and flag-wavers of the Historical Parade of the Florentine Republic, it moves from the square of the Pratodrawn by two pairs of white oxen adorned with flowers, and arrives in Piazza del Duomowhere it is placed in the space between the Baptistery and the Cathedral.
Then, to the singing of the “Gloria in Excelsis Deo”, the fuse of the dove is set on fire which, hissing, sets fire to the firecrackers and fireworks cleverly arranged on the cart.
The Via Crucis in Rome
It is one of the most important events in Italy: the Via Crucis at the Colosseumcelebrated for the first time in 1750 at the behest of Pope Benedict XIV, will start on Friday 7 April at 21.15
The path guided by the Pontiff follows the 14 stages of Jesus’ journey towards Mount Calvaryfrom the condemnation of Pilate to the crucifixion, concluding with the death, the deposition from the Cross and the sepulchre. Each year the Pope chooses a general theme which will be represented in the various stations of the Via Crucis on Good Friday.
The Pasquali of Bormio
The ancient ritual of the Pasquali of Bormioin the heart of the Lombard Alps, one of the most ancient Easter traditions of the peninsula consists of a competition between the districts of the city to the sound of imposing allegorical floats decorated and adorned with flowers and moss that parade along the long via Roma up to the main square of Bormio.
Once upon a time, instead of carts, little lambs were decoratedbut the tradition has changed pace in favor of a more ethical choice and the carts have taken the place of the lambs.
The mysteries of Trapani and the procession
An ancient tradition that has been going on for 400 years. It’s about the Procession of the Mysteries of Trapani which takes place from 2 pm on Good Friday and lasts for almost twenty-four hours, until Saturday. It is the longest Italian religious event and one of the oldest.
In fact, the sacred groups of mysteries travel most of the streets of the Sicilian city, in a show of lights, sounds, colors and emotions.
THE Misteri are twenty artistic representations of the Passion and Death of Christexactly eighteen groups, plus the two simulacra of Jesus Morto and Maria Addolorata and are kept in the eighteenth-century Baroque church of the Holy Souls in Purgatory from where the procession starts on the afternoon of Good Friday.
Museums open
There are many museums also open at Easter and Easter Monday, even if in some cases with reduced hours. At Easter the Royal Palace of Caserta can be visited in the morningwhile on Easter Monday it remains closed to the public.
Almost all the museums in Rome are open on Easter Mondayas well as the archaeological areas around the capital.
TO Turin, however, the Egyptian Museum closes at 14.00 during the two days of celebration.
And also to Florence, from the Uffizi to the Accademia Galleryyou can spend a morning among the most famous works of art in the world.
Easter and Easter Monday in Milan
In the capital of Lombardy on Easter Monday there is the Fiera dell’Angeloone of the oldest Milanese Easter traditions which is celebrated in the area surrounding the Church of Sant’Angelo, on the corner of via Moscova and Corso di Porta Nuova.
It is a large flower and plant market, but not only. Because you can find clothing, home accessories but also regional gastronomic specialities, ethnic curiosities and handicraft products.
Easter and Easter Monday weekend at Gardaland
For a day of guaranteed fun for the whole family there is the Gardaland amusement park on Lake Garda, a few steps from Peschiera del Garda.
Its attractions, shows and rides even for the little ones they will be open on Easter and also on Easter Monday from 10.00 to 18.00.
