East Germany forest fires under control after rain

The forest fires in eastern Germany have been largely brought under control after Monday morning’s rain. The mayor of the village of Beelitz, about 50 kilometers southwest of Berlin, reports that the fire has not yet been extinguished everywhere, but that it is safe enough for people to return to their homes.

Residents of the area were evacuated because of the wildfires. Shelter had been arranged for them in the town hall of nearby Treuenbrietzen. The mayor advises people who are going back home to keep their windows and doors closed as much as possible on Monday. The fire can still produce a lot of smoke. Most of the roads that were closed have been reopened.

The fire started on Friday because it was exceptionally warm in eastern Germany, in some places up to 38 degrees. It was difficult for the fire brigade to reach the fires. The German army has, among other things, sent fire fighting helicopters to the area.

The temperature has now dropped significantly in the region. According to German weather reports, more rain will fall in the area around the fires on Monday.
