Earthquake with magnitude of 1.6 in Winde

There was an earthquake in the village of Winde tonight. This had a force of 1.6 on the Richter scale and, according to the KNMI, took place at a depth of 3 kilometers.

The quake was registered a few minutes after 9:30 am. It is not known whether the earthquake caused any damage. According to the KNMI, earthquakes do not occur often in Winde. The last was in September 2020. It then had a force of 1.8.

The earthquakes in Groningen and the surrounding area are caused by gas extraction there. The strongest earthquake to date in the area was on August 16, 2012 near Huizinge in northern Groningen. That quake had a magnitude of 3.6.

In June it was announced that the Groningen gas tap will close on 1 October. That is sixty years after gas extraction began.
