An earthquake on the Indonesian island of Java killed nearly twenty people on Monday, a government official told local media. At least three hundred are injured.
The quake measured 5.6 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was in the city of Cianjur in West Java, about 75 kilometers southeast of Jakarta, the Indonesian Meteorology Agency (BMKG) reported. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. There was no chance of a tsunami.
A local government official from Cianjur has opposed the news channel Subway TV stated that in one hospital nearly twenty people have died and at least three hundred injured are being treated.
As far as is known, there have been no casualties in Jakarta. There, buildings began to shake and people were evacuated from offices, among other things.
