Earplugs or a weekend away to get through the deafening demolition of the A9 viaduct Amstelveen

Residents living near the A9 viaduct on the Keizer Karelweg in Amstelveen will be put to the test from Thursday evening 20 April to Monday night 24 April. The viaduct will then be demolished and that will be anything but silent. Rijkswaterstaat offers them a way out: custom-made earplugs or an overnight stay in a hotel. Keizer Karelweg and A9 exit Stadshart will be closed to traffic.

Because all traffic on the A9 now passes over the temporary bypass and therefore no longer over the viaduct, it can be demolished. “The concrete of the viaduct is crushed and falls to the ground in large chunks,” said a spokesman for Rijkswaterstaat. To protect the asphalt, a layer of sand and road plates are laid.

Wet spraying

Executor Veenix is taking various measures to limit the nuisance for the environment. For example, the fragments are not crushed on site and water is sprayed during the work, so that as little dust as possible is released. Residents living near the A9 told NH News about a month ago that the inconvenience is not too bad so farbut now for the first time work will be done in the middle of built-up areas.

“We look at the noise contours for each nuisance period,” says Rijkswaterstaat, which frankly admits that “the nuisance will become major” in the coming nuisance period. That is why residents are offered options to alleviate the nuisance or to escape it completely.

Decibels on the facade

To determine who qualifies for which ‘compensatory measure’, Rijkswaterstaat divides the nuisance into three categories. “Before the work, we determined with noise measurements how many decibels will be on the facade,” says the spokesperson. “On the basis of this, sound circles were made.”

“We are very sorry that we are causing this”

Rijkswaterstaat

Residents of Amstelveen who experience 60 to 65 decibels on their facade at night are eligible for custom-made earplugs. “A hearing care professional visited the residents for this. There was a lot of enthusiasm for it, and residents are very happy with it.” Those who experience more than 65 decibels at night will receive vouchers to book an ‘average’ hotel. “For two nights. We’re super sorry that we’re causing this.”

A third category are residents who receive 80 decibels or more on their facade during the day. Rijkswaterstaat offers them headphones that dampen the ambient noise. “To ease the suffering”

Traffic disruption

Closing Keizer Karelweg and the Amstelveen-Stadshart slip roads and exits will cause considerable traffic disruption. Driveway 5 towards Amsterdam/Utrecht will remain open as usual. Diversions for cars run via the Amsterdamseweg or the Beneluxbaan. Cyclists are diverted via the Keerpuntweg.

Rijkswaterstaat indicates that it usually only opts for road closures at night, but wants to limit the nuisance for local residents by completing the work as quickly as possible. That is why we continue to work during the day.

Shuttle service

Pedestrians and disabled people who encounter a blocked road can use a temporary shuttle service, which also has a space for mobility scooters. Between 7:00 PM and 7:00 AM you must call in advance. A number of Connexxion bus lines run an adjusted timetable.

The work will last from Thursday 20 April 20:00 to Monday 24 April 05:00. The widened A9 with a sunken location must be ready in 2027.
