In the first round of the men’s singles tournament of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) 500 series hosted by the capital Tokyo, number 3 seed Zverev and world number 60 Australian Jordan Thompson met.
Thompson made a surprise by defeating his opponent 2-0 with sets of 6-3 and 6-4 after the fight that lasted 1 hour and 35 minutes.
Thompson, 29, will face the winner of the season’s US Open semi-finalist Ben Shelton and Taro Daniel in the second round.
