Dynamo Dresden fires coach Alexander Schmidt

Caprietti as successor?

The SG Dynamo Dresden has reacted to the sporting descent and separated from coach Alexander Schmidt. Reports from the “image” and the “sports buzzer“ confirmed the second division team on Tuesday afternoon. Previously, pictures showed how Schmidt left the Dresden training ground with a packed bag in the morning.

The 53-year-old took over the Saxons in April 2021 and led them back to the 2nd Bundesliga. Under Schmidt’s management, the SGD scored an average of 1.41 points in 34 games, but the Dresdeners recently remained without a win in seven games. Dynamo is in 14th place with 26 points from 24 games and is only one point ahead of the relegation place.

“This step really wasn’t easy for us. But we are currently in a difficult sporting situation. This year’s games didn’t go the way we all would have liked. And even if we are fundamentally completely convinced of the path we have taken, we hope that a change in the position of head coach in this critical phase of the season will give us an additional boost in the fight to stay up,” said sports director Ralf Becker.

For the time being, the team will be looked after on an interim basis by the previous assistant coach, Ferydoon Zandi. As the “image‘ reported, Schmidt’s successor has already been determined. Guerino Capretti is set to become Dynamo’s new head coach. The 40-year-old was the coach of SC Verl for almost five years until mid-February, which he led to the 3rd division for the first time in 2020.
