‘Dutchman detained in Sudan released’

The Dutch man who was detained in Sudan last week by the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has been released. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported to the ANP news agency on Tuesday that the man was released last Saturday. He then flew to the United Kingdom via Cyprus, the spokesperson said. In addition to Dutch, the man also has British nationality.

Opposite RTL News his wife said that since last Thursday she has been unable to contact her husband, who was born in Sudan and worked there as a businessman. According to his wife, he and the caretaker of his house were taken away by the RSF militants when they wanted to stock up on food. According to the wife at RSF headquarters, the janitor was immediately released. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not commenting on the circumstances of the release.

About three weeks ago fighting broke out in Sudan between two factions within the Sudanese army: the original regular army and General Hemedti’s RSF. Heavy fighting took place in the capital Khartoum, resulting in at least 500 deaths and thousands of injuries. According to the United Nations, 100,000 people have already fled the country. Last Saturday, the last Dutch evacuation flight left Sudan; at least 160 Dutch people were evacuated with the evacuation flights.
