A Dutch tourist has seen his beach holiday in Mauritius, an island state in the Indian Ocean about 2000 kilometers off the east coast of Africa, end in jail last week.
The man had to be tested for coronavirus when he checked in at his five-star hotel on the south coast of the island on Friday, March 4. The result was negative but in a second PCR test he tested positive on Monday. The hotel management placed him in an isolation room and told him that he must remain in quarantine for seven days in accordance with the protocol of the Ministry of Health. The tourist agreed, reports the news site l’Express.
On Tuesday, according to the newspaper, the Dutchman enjoyed the facilities of the hotel in Bel-Ombre all day long for a total amount of 20,866 Mauritian Rupee, about 430 euros. When an employee knocked on his room door around 7 p.m. to serve dinner, the bird appeared to have flown. The director of the Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort immediately alerted the police, who informed customs at the airport and started an investigation.
The Dutchman was located the same evening. He was arrested and handed over to the Ministry of Health. He placed him in a quarantine center in Bella-Mare on the northeast coast of the island, which is about the size of the province of Utrecht. After the end of his isolation period, he will have to answer to the judge for quarantine flight.
