Dutch-speaking musicians big winners at Edison Pop Awards this year, from Sef to Jan Smit

Eight of the twelve Edison Pop Awards presented in Leusden on Monday evening went to Dutch albums or singles. According to jury chairman and radio DJ Daniël Dekker, “homegrown music is extremely popular” because “the level of Dutch music is high.” There was a different winner in all twelve categories. For comparison: last year Goldband won in the categories ‘newcomer’, ‘video clip’ and ‘song’.

Rapper Sef won the Edison for the best album with I Could Die For Much But Not For A Flag. Furthermore, Pip Blom was the best newcomer, ‘Tonight’ by Son Mieux was the best song and techno DJ Reinier Zonneveld had the best dance song with ‘Heaven Is Mad’.

Last week it was announced that Jan Smit has won the Oeuvre Prize for his three decades of contributions to Dutch music. Previously, Kensington, Guus Meeuwis, The Opposites and Willeke Alberti won the oeuvre prize.

Last year, the Dutch music industry grew by 9 percent to a total value of 300 million euros. According to the Edisons’ organization, both singles and albums by Dutch artists scored well.
