Dutch police arrest hundreds of activists at highway blockade by Extinction Rebellion

Extinction Rebellion (XR) has been blocking the Dutch A12 motorway near The Hague for the seventh time since 12 o’clock this afternoon. The environmentalists protest against subsidies to the fossil fuel industry. The protest has been banned by the municipality and the police deployed water cannons after more than fifteen minutes. Hundreds of activists have been arrested, but due to the “peaceful nature” of the demonstration, most are not prosecuted. This is reported by the Public Prosecution Service.
