Eurocross emergency center and the Leiden University Medical Center conducted research into skiing accidents. This shows that the profile of the skier most at risk is a man of average age, who is just short of a beginner. These skiers think they can take risks, but that often turns out less well.
Overestimate skiing skills
The Dutch appear to greatly overestimate themselves on the slopes. In 2020, 84 Dutch people were asked about their skills and then they received figures from various ski instructors. 80% of the skiers surveyed found themselves to rate themselves higher than the judgment of the professionals. Men in particular (90%) thought they could ski better than they actually did. That was true for 64% of the women.
Any circumstance
“You’re only a good skier if you can hold your own under any circumstance. Even in bad weather or an icy slope,” one of the researchers tells us the AD† And that turned out not to be the case for many people in the middle bracket. Curious how good you are? On the website from Eurocross you can do a scan to discover your level. And there too they warn that you can greatly overestimate yourself.
