Amsterdam studio The Visionary Lab invited fashion designers and artists to breathe new life into used chairs from Swiss furniture company Vitra using recycled denim from Levi’s. The result is unique chairs that will not only be on display during the Dutch Design Week from October 21st to 29th in the exhibition “Icons Re/Outfitted” in a former wood workshop on Fuutlaan 12C in Eindhoven, but will also be an invitation to visit to take a seat.
“We are excited to be part of ‘Icons Re/Outfitted’, which not only promotes innovation and craftsmanship, but also shows how the life of our textiles can be extended through innovative design methods,” comments Anit Van Eynde, Vice President Marketing & BX Europe at Levi Strauss & Co.
“This year we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Levi’s 501 jeans, and as we celebrate the incredible history of this iconic product, these unique, artful chairs invite us to unleash the creative potential of reimagined denim,” adds Van Eynde .
Nkwo Onwuka, Hannah Brabon, Kelly Konings, Tim Dekkers, Sophie Cagniart, Barbara Polderman, Sarmite Polakova and Norman Monsanto are the designers who took up the challenge. Her creations include innovative techniques such as 3D digital weaving techniques, organic textiles and recycled denim felt, combined with craftsmanship.
“These artfully upcycled chairs are not only eye-catchers, but also stimulate meaningful conversations about sustainability. Each creation is a testament to our commitment to reducing waste and finding beauty in unexpected places,” the statement said.
The Visionary Lab’s mission is to reinterpret what is thrown away and create works of art from things that are no longer needed. As a timeless cult material, denim transcends boundaries and is appreciated worldwide by people of all ages, sizes and backgrounds. “Our mission is to redefine waste and reveal the beauty that lies in the unexpected. We are very proud to bring this artistic project to life,” explains the studio.
