Dutch company Hardt Hyperloop: “Working hyperloop in Europe possible in 2030” | Abroad

By 2030, there could be a commercial hyperloop or maglev train in Europe. That is what Mars Geuze, the co-founder of the Dutch company Hardt Hyperloop, thinks. His company is working on a test track in Veendam, construction of which will start this summer. By 2027, Hardt believes he will have passed all safety tests and be ready for the real work.

“Many countries are interested and many companies are working on hyperloop systems,” says Geuze. He indicates that much progress has been made with the transportation system since Tesla CEO Elon Musk came up with the idea in 2013.

What is a hyperloop?

In 2013, Tesla CEO and billionaire Elon Musk came up with the idea of having a maglev train travel through a vacuum tube. The transport system allows people and goods to be transported with relatively little energy and at high speeds.

Hardt has also made great strides in recent years. For example, the company collaborated intensively on setting up a worldwide standard for hyperloops. In June, the company will move to a new head office in Rotterdam. With the new CEO Bertrand van Ee, who was previously at the helm of engineering firm ‘Royal Haskoning DHV’, Hardt is emphatically preparing for the possible construction of a commercial hyperloop connection.

Advantages

“We are still waiting for a country to be the first to build a runway.” As far as Geuze is concerned, this can also be a short connection to, for example, an airport. “Doing that first will provide you with expertise and also a specialist industry. If you want to build a dike, you call the Dutch. It would be nice if this also applies to hyperloops,” it sounds.

According to Geuze, the hyperloop offers many advantages over high-speed trains. “It is cheaper to build, uses less power, takes up less space and is much more flexible.” The hyperloop trains can also change direction to another tube without any problems, just like a car on the highway.
