According to the Dutch chairwoman of the party BoerenBelangenBurger Caroline van der Plas, it is inevitable that the Dutch government will throw in the towel. She said this in VTM Nieuws after the crushing success of her party during the provincial elections yesterday. BBB obtained the majority of the votes in eight of the twelve Dutch provinces.
“It is still so unreal,” said a proud Caroline van der Plas. According to her, the success of her party is the result of “long-standing dissatisfaction in the Netherlands about government policy”. “People don’t feel heard, seen and taken seriously.”
BBB now wants to take responsibility and bring about change. First on the agenda is tackling the nitrogen targets. In addition, the party also wants to prevent people from being expropriated.
“Democracy can break”
The result of the election is a clear signal to the government of Prime Minister Mark Rutte, says van der Plas. “The Rutte government cannot continue, there is no confidence anymore. The cabinet must say: ‘We’re going to stop’”, said the BBB chairwoman. “Listen carefully to your people and don’t ignore them. That is disastrous for confidence. Democracy can break,” she warned. According to her, it is therefore inevitable that Rutte will throw in the towel.
BBB’s success also seems to have inspired some Flemings to set up a party of the same name. “We will support them if necessary and give advice,” says the party chairwoman. Van der Plas would not yet have had contact with Flemish parties, but intends to do so “towards the European elections”. She would also have had “a lot of contact with farmers in Flanders”.
